Lochaber
The service in Lochaber, and in the Badenoch and Strathspey area, is co-ordinated by Shena Wardrope.
Having taken up the post of Advocate in Lochaber in April 2007, I have dealt with a whole variety of situations but a considerable amount of work has been on Mental Health issues, on various issues for people with Learning Difficulties and also with Children and Families in respect of Reviews and Hearings.
Shena and I have given talks about Advocacy to some groups around Lochaber, including Mentors, Learning Support Teachers and Service User groups.
The agencies in the area make referrals to us whilst other referrals come by word of mouth or our own publicity.
The work is challenging but very rewarding. Housing issues often arise – these are difficult to resolve given the high demand for a very limited stock of houses.
It is expected that 2008 will see demand for Advocacy services in Lochaber continue to increase.
Volunteers are available to support delivery of the service in the area. Should you be interested in becoming an Advocate on a voluntary basis please contact Shena on 077 177 04637. Initial training is given over 8 weeks, a few hours each week, when there are a sufficient number of new volunteers interested.
